West Croft School in Bideford has launched a second Walking Bus route with the support of adult volunteers trained in road safety. Similar to a regular bus, the Walking Bus follows a fixed route, picking up children at designated stops along the way. This initiative has been well-received, with over 30 children now using the Walking Buses. Students appreciate the safety, fun, and exercise provided by the Walking Bus, while adults benefit from the physical activity. Replacing motorised transport with active travel combats climate change by reducing traffic, fuel usage and emissions.

The scheme has positively impacted attendance and reassured parents about their children’s safety. Free support and guidance from Devon County Council’s Road Safety Team have facilitated the success of the Walking Bus initiative.
