University of Exeter’s Impact at Climate Week NYC

Researchers from the Global Systems Institute at the University of Exeter actively participated in numerous events during Climate Week in New York City. Devon is lucky to have universities influencing action on climate change at an international level, as well as collaborating with other organisations on action locally through the Devon Climate Emergency partnership. Here is a round up of how Exeter researchers took part in Climate Week:

  • Professor Tim Lenton launched the report “A positive tipping cascade in power, transport and heating” during the Climate Group’s opening session on Monday. He also featured alongside Christiana Figueres in a Covering Climate Now briefing, joined a live recording of the Outrage and Optimism podcast, and delivered a keynote at the World Climate Summit.
  • Professor Pierre Friedlingstein discussed the Global Carbon Budget at the Penn Center for Science, Sustainability and the Media, and The Rockefeller University.
  • Professor Richard Betts participated in a World Economic Forum event focused on the Amazon rainforest and visited NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS), the main climate modeling center in the US.
  • Professor Gail Whiteman spoke at various events and launched the Hoffmann Impact Team for Accelerating Action on Nature and Climate.
  • Dr. Steven Smith advocated for the triggering of positive tipping cascades across the global economy.

Stuart Brocklehurst, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Business Engagement and Innovation at the University of Exeter, emphasized the significance of Climate Week NYC, stating:

“Climate Week NYC is the world’s largest gathering of climate activists, innovators, and decision-makers. The University of Exeter’s mission is to drive meaningful action on climate change. The key role our academics played in so many events across the week helped to deliver that, ensuring that science sits at the center of decision-making.”
