Totnes is taking a bold step toward a greener future with the launch of a new electric bike hire scheme, “Catbikes”, set to hit the streets this June.

As part of South Hams District Council’s ongoing commitment to tackling climate change and promoting sustainable transport, the Catbikes initiative will provide residents and visitors with 24/7 access to a fleet of electric bikes via a user-friendly mobile app. The scheme is designed to make cycling more accessible, especially in a hilly town like Totnes, where the e-bike’s extra boost can make all the difference.

The bikes will be stationed at key locations across the town, including: Shady Gardens, Rotherfold Square, Steamer Quay, Weston Lane (Bridgetown), Totnes Train Station, Totnes Pavilions, and Follaton House.

New signage and bike racks are being installed to support the rollout.

The scheme also aims to support the local economy by making it easier for visitors to explore Totnes’ shops, markets, and historic sites like the castle.

This initiative aligns with the Devon Climate Emergency’s goals of reducing carbon emissions and promoting low-carbon transport solutions. By making sustainable travel more convenient and enjoyable, Totnes is setting a strong example for other communities across Devon.
