Teign Estuary Cycle Trail

07.01.2022

The Teign Estuary Trail will run from Newton Abbot to Dawlish, where it will connect with the already existing Exe Estuary. The Teign Estuary Trail plans are supported by the local councils, including Devon County Council, Teignbridge District Council, who are both partners of DCE, and town and parish councils along the estuary.

Public consultation at the end of last year showed that 98% of respondents support the Trail, with the majority stating it would provide safety benefits for cyclists and pedestrians. 94% also said they felt the trail would encourage them to cycle more regularly and 57% said they would use it at least once a week.

The completion of the Teign Estuary Trail will enable cyclists and pedestrians to travel safely from Newton Abbot all the way round the coast, joining the Exe Estuary Trail which ends in Exmouth. A number of benefits go hand in hand with a shift towards active travel: a reduction in emissions from transport, improvements in mental and physical health from leading a more active lifestyle.

In December 2021, the section from the Passage House Inn to Teignmouth was granted planning permission by Devon County Council’s Development Management Committee.

How is this helping Devon reach net-zero?

Action T7: Improve strategic cycle routes between and within settlements.

The Teign Estuary Trail will offer a safe, well connected pedestrian and cycle route in Teignbridge, supporting a shift towards active travel which helps to reduce emissions from transport in Devon.
