Starting a Revolution on the Exe
19.12.24

Work on the Exe Estuary is going green after the Exeter Port Authority took delivery of a new hydrogen electric boat for a trial period.
The boat has been made and designed by Ecomar Propulsion and will be based on the estuary for a limited period of time to assist with the trials and testing of the vessel.
The boat was launched into Exmouth harbour and is currently in the final stages of fitting out. A team from Ecomar Propulsion are currently installing the last items on an innovative new power systems and they are doing it whilst she is afloat.
This project involves the trial of hydrogen-electric boats, which are being tested for their efficiency and environmental impact. The use of hydrogen fuel cells and electric propulsion systems in these boats represents a significant step towards reducing emissions from maritime transport, a sector traditionally reliant on fossil fuels.
The trial, conducted in collaboration with Exeter University’s Centre for Clean Future Mobility, gathers data on the performance and feasibility of hydrogen-electric boats. This data will inform future developments and potential wider adoption of clean maritime technologies. By demonstrating the viability of these technologies, the project aims to pave the way for a broader transition to low-emission vessels, contributing to the overall reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
By showcasing the benefits and practicality of hydrogen-electric boats, the initiative seeks to inspire other coastal communities to adopt similar technologies, thereby amplifying the impact on emissions reduction and climate adaptation.
