Two Plymouth schools – Notre Dame RC School and St Boniface’s RC College – are among the first in the UK to benefit from rooftop solar panels under Great British Energy’s national rollout. This initiative aims to cut energy bills and carbon emissions for public services.

The installations are already delivering significant savings, estimated at £40,000 annually for the two schools, freeing up funds for educational resources. Across England, more than 250 schools have signed agreements to receive solar panels and energy-efficiency upgrades through a £100 million fund. The programme also supports green skills development by involving further education colleges in each region.

This investment is part of the government’s clean energy mission and complements the School Rebuilding Programme, which prioritises climate resilience and net-zero operation. By reducing reliance on fossil fuels and reinvesting savings into education, these projects demonstrate how renewable energy can deliver both environmental and social benefits.
