Plymouth is set to introduce 50 zero-emission electric double-decker buses this year as part of a £31.87 million joint investment. This initiative is backed by Plymouth Citybus, the Go-Ahead Group, Plymouth City Council, Cornwall Council, and the Department for Transport.

The new electric buses will replace nearly half of Plymouth Citybus’s fleet, enhancing passenger experience, reducing emissions, and improving air quality. These buses will operate on key routes in Plymouth and Cornwall.

To support the new fleet, Plymouth Citybus is upgrading its Milehouse depot into a hub equipped to charge and maintain the zero-emission vehicles. The first buses are expected to enter service in the summer, with all 50 buses on the road by the end of the year.

This project aligns with Plymouth’s Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP) and net-zero ambitions for 2030, marking a significant step towards a cleaner, greener future.
