Construction of the new Okehampton Interchange railway station has reached a major milestone with the installation of its lift shaft, footbridge, and staircase. The £15 million project, backed by the Government and supported by Devon County Council and West Devon Borough Council, is due to open in summer 2026.

Once complete, the station will offer hourly services linking West Devon, Torridge, and North Cornwall with Exeter. This improved connectivity is expected to reduce car dependency, helping Devon meet its climate goals by encouraging a shift to public transport. It supports Goal TA: Relocalisation and Technology Reduces Our Need to Travel, particularly Action T2, which aims to provide community assets that minimise travel needs.

The project also aligns with Goal TB: Using Active, Shared and Public Transport is Safe, Efficient and Affordable, through Action T21, which promotes enhancements to strategic and branch-line rail infrastructure. By investing in sustainable transport, the interchange contributes to lowering emissions, easing congestion, and supporting local economies.
