Met Office and Network Rail Partner to Boost Rail Resilience
15/09/2025

The Met Office and Network Rail have signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding to accelerate research into how weather impacts the UK’s railway network. This collaboration aims to reduce the time required to commission research from months to mere days, enabling faster responses to extreme weather events and improving passenger experience.
By combining the Met Office’s world-leading meteorological expertise with Network Rail’s infrastructure knowledge, the partnership will enhance forecasting capabilities and develop innovative solutions to mitigate weather-related disruptions. This includes better planning for heatwaves, storms, and flooding—conditions that increasingly affect rail performance due to climate change.
The initiative is part of a broader effort to build a more resilient transport system, ensuring safety and reliability for passengers while supporting long-term climate adaptation goals.
