A major investment package in Plymouth is set to make getting around the city cleaner, easier and more reliable. Nearly £20 million will be invested over the next four years to strengthen bus services and support more walking and cycling, helping people choose lower‑carbon ways to travel.

The funding supports a wide-ranging programme to improve how buses operate and how passengers experience them. This includes longer operating hours, upgraded bus stops, clearer and more accessible travel information, and improvements at park and ride sites. Measures to reduce delays and improve reliability are also part of the plan, alongside steps to modernise and decarbonise the local bus fleet.

Alongside bus improvements, additional funding will continue a behaviour‑change programme that supports people to walk and cycle more. This includes adult cycle training, led rides and walks, bike maintenance support, and engagement with schools. Public campaigns and work to shape the next local transport plan are also included, helping to build long‑term change.

While this investment is focused on Plymouth, it reflects the kind of joined‑up approach that can support Devon’s wider net‑zero ambition. Cleaner public transport, safer walking and cycling, and better travel information all help cut emissions while making everyday journeys healthier and more affordable. Projects like this show how transport investment can deliver climate benefits alongside social and economic ones, when it is designed around people’s real travel needs.
