A recent study by the University of Exeter has explored the transformative impact of a local eco-hub on pro-environmental behaviour, community inclusion, and wellbeing. The research highlights how eco-hubs serve as catalysts for sustainable living by offering accessible spaces for learning, collaboration, and action. Participants reported increased environmental awareness, stronger community ties, and improved mental wellbeing through engagement with the hub’s activities.

One of the key case studies in the research was Sideshore in Exmouth, a coastal eco-hub that exemplifies how community-led spaces can foster low-carbon lifestyles. Through its mix of educational programmes, sustainable businesses, and inclusive design, Sideshore has become a model for how place-based initiatives can support both environmental and social goals.

The findings suggest that eco-hubs not only foster individual behavioural change but also cultivate collective resilience and empowerment. By providing practical resources, workshops, and opportunities for volunteering, these hubs help communities envision and enact their own low-carbon futures.

The study underscores the importance of place-based initiatives in addressing climate change and social inequality, advocating for wider adoption of eco-hubs across Devon and beyond.
