Devon County Council is taking a new, climate-conscious approach towards road maintenance. Reviewing everything from the materials involved and how they’re used, to the longevity of road maintenance procedures and the labour needed, Devon County Council aims to reduce carbon emissions at every stage.

They have developed a ‘carbon calculator’ for common road maintenance jobs and new builds, which will make it easier to understand the carbon impact of highway maintenance, and signpost key areas for emissions reduction. The council hopes that over time this will add up to a significant reduction in carbon emissions across Devon.

How is this helping Devon reach net-zero?

This helps to implement action C1: ‘Foster innovation in technologies, institutions, business models, policy design and behaviour to achieve Net-zero.’
