Schools across Devon are stepping up their sustainability efforts following the county’s first Schools Sustainability Conference, held at Sandy Park last week. Organised by Devon Education Services with support from Devon Climate Emergency and Recycle Devon, the event brought together staff from 80 schools, spanning primary, secondary, early years, and special education, to share ideas and develop practical plans to tackle climate change.

The conference featured talks, workshops, and panel discussions on biodiversity, energy efficiency, waste reduction, and climate adaptation. Attendees explored funding opportunities and learned from schools already leading the way. An exhibition showcased resources and expert advice on renewable energy, eco-friendly products, and waste management.

A key focus was helping schools meet the Department for Education’s requirement for a nominated sustainability lead and a Climate Action Plan. Teachers left inspired, ready to implement changes such as boosting wildlife projects, cutting energy use, and promoting recycling. Recycle Devon’s Waste Education Team highlighted their free workshops and the Watch Our Waste (WOW) programme, which encourages pupils to reduce waste throughout the year.
