Members of Devon County Council recently attended a screening of “The People’s Emergency Briefing,” a 50-minute film that presented the latest scientific evidence on the climate and nature crisis. The film explored the various impacts of this crisis on critical areas such as infrastructure, public health, food systems, and the economy. The screening provided an opportunity for councillors to discuss what these risks signify locally for Devon, thereby enhancing their understanding of the challenges and potential responses from communities and decision-makers.

Councillor Jacqi Hodgson, who holds Cabinet Member responsibility for Climate Change and Biodiversity, highlighted that this initiative aligns with the Devon Climate Emergency partnership’s commitment to coordinated, partnership-led actions aimed at achieving net-zero emissions. The effort also supports the Devon, Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Climate Adaptation Strategy, which underscores the importance of building resilience against increasing threats like flooding, extreme weather, and their effects on communities and services.

Councillor Hodgson further announced that monthly lunchtime briefings would be conducted to cover different components of the carbon plan. She expressed concern that current actions might not be sufficient and advocated for a proactive, “wartime attitude” to address the climate emergency, rather than a reactive approach. This, she suggested, could empower representatives to take more significant action at all levels, leading to a substantial positive impact.
