Children Help Restore Nature Through Hands‑On Rewilding
30/03/2026

Children taking part in a half‑term outdoor activity spent the day helping with a rewilding project designed to restore a former sheep field into a healthier, wildlife‑friendly landscape. The group explored the site’s growing network of ponds and newly planted trees, gaining first‑hand experience of how landscapes can recover when given the chance.
A special highlight for the children was the involvement of naturalist Chris Packham, who joined the session to encourage their curiosity about the natural world. His presence helped spark interest and excitement as the children learned how small, practical actions, such as planting native willow, alder and aspen, can support insects, stabilise riverbanks and improve local biodiversity.
The activity also showed how learning outdoors can build confidence and a sense of connection. Many of the children were absorbed in the task, working together, discovering wildlife, and experiencing the satisfaction of helping a place regenerate.
These kinds of initiatives can help build the long‑term stewardship, skills and awareness needed to support Devon’s journey towards a resilient, net‑zero future.
