Central Park Ponds Project Nears Completion with Autumn Planting Ahead
29/09/2025

September marks a significant milestone for Plymouth’s Central Park Ponds Project. The heavy earthworks on the playing pitches and Reservoir Field have now concluded, and the contractor has left the site. The footpath linking Barn Park corner to Pounds Park has reopened, although repairs to damage caused by machinery are scheduled for October.
While the major construction phase is complete, the project is entering its final stages. This week, over 30,000m² of meadow grass seed will be laid across Reservoir Field and the surrounding areas, alongside nearly 6,000m² of grass seed for the pitches. The temporary fencing around the northern pond will soon be replaced with permanent hoop-top fencing to match the southern pond.
Throughout autumn and winter, the pitches and Reservoir Field will remain closed to allow the new grass to establish. In December, the final planting will take place, including 57 large trees, 94m² of new hedgerow, and hundreds of shrubs and pollinator-friendly plants. Once the vegetation is thriving, the fencing will be removed, and the public will be able to enjoy the rejuvenated space—hopefully by next summer.
This project not only enhances biodiversity and climate resilience but also supports low-carbon recreation and community engagement.
