AI Trial Helps Cut Sewage Pollution in Devon and Cornwall
06/11/2025

South West Water (SWW) has reported promising results from an artificial intelligence (AI) trial aimed at reducing sewage pollution. The system uses data from 12,000 sensors across the sewer network to predict blockages before they cause overflows. By monitoring water levels and analysing patterns, the AI can alert operatives to potential issues, preventing pollution incidents. SWW estimates that around 200 pollution events have already been avoided thanks to this technology.
The trial also employs AI to process hours of CCTV footage, identifying defects and blockages in wastewater pipes far faster than manual inspections. This frees up operatives to survey more of the network and address problems proactively. The initiative forms part of SWW’s Pollution Incident Reduction Plan, alongside a £760 million investment programme focused on storm overflow reduction and improved environmental performance.
Experts from the University of Exeter are collaborating on the project, highlighting how AI can transform environmental monitoring. SWW hopes the trial will help it move beyond its current “requires improvement” rating from Ofwat and demonstrate leadership in sustainable water management.
