A fleet of electric buses  are on course to grace the roads of Devon, covering routes in Torbay, Exeter, North Devon and Torridge.

Through a successful joint effort with Stagecoach, Devon County Council and Torbay Council have secured £12.4 million from the Department for Transport’s second round of the Zero Emission Bus Regional Areas (ZEBRA) scheme. The funding was secured through two separate bids by the local authorities with Stagecoach, with Devon awarded £5.3 million and Torbay £7.1 million.

Stagecoach is contributing an additional £15 million to introduce new EV buses on routes in Exeter, such as Service 4, Service A, and the Green Park and Ride service. In North Devon and Torridge, these buses will operate on Services 21/21A and various town services in Barnstaple. Combined with a substantial contribution from Stagecoach, the investment will enable much of the Torbay fleet to be modernised.

The anticipated rollout of electric buses by early 2026 is expected to redefine the public image of transportation, attracting new passengers, increasing park and ride utilisation, and mitigating air pollution.

Stagecoach is poised to establish EV charging infrastructure across its depots, including those in Exeter and Barnstaple.

This substantial investment lays the foundation for the bus company’s expansion of zero- and low-emission vehicle fleets across the Southwest. Plans are also in place to develop a community charging hub at the Matford depot in Exeter.

Peter Knight, Managing Director at Stagecoach South West, expressed excitement about this milestone. He highlighted Stagecoach’s commitment to decarbonisation and its role in fostering cleaner air and robust bus services in the region.

Devon and Torbay are among 25 local authorities nationwide receiving a portion of the £143 million funding through the ZEBRA program’s second phase, which will facilitate the deployment of 955 zero-emission buses in England.
