Made In Devon is a new scheme that aims to link certified Devon-based producers with consumers, encouraging people to shop locally and support Devon’s economy. Devon, Somerset, Plymouth and Torbay Trading Standards have come together to set up this scheme to certify businesses that are producing genuine Devon-made products.
The Made in Devon scheme will help Devon’s businesses to stand out from the crowd by building on their reputation for producing quality goods sourced in Devon and made in Devon. All Made In Devon businesses will be subject to a check by Trading Standards, allowing customers to shop with confidence knowing the listed businesses are trustworthy local traders. Membership also provides local businesses with a full audit, including a full review of their complaints’ history, access to legal and trading advice and business support from an award-winning trading standards team.
During the first lockdown in Spring 2021 demand for locally produced items rose, with over 40% of buyers choosing to shop local. Almost half of those polled said that they were ‘motivated’ to support local businesses. The Made In Devon website will encourage consumers to shop locally, with a search function allowing shoppers to filter businesses by area or product type. Devon Hampers is one of the first businesses to sign up to the scheme, with lots of public interest into the scheme during the recent Devon County Show.
Made In Devon supports the vision in the Devon Carbon Plan of a vibrant Devon, where we retain the value of our produce locally and shift to more sustainable consumption habits, such as choosing local produced items. The website will also be a useful resource in boosting Devon’s economic recovery.
